Using Skype on Iphone to Make Free Call? Is it real?

In just two days after its launch on Tuesday, Skype (the internet telephone unit of eBay Inc. with more than 450 million customers registered worldwide) now for Apple’s iPhone passed the one million mark in downloads!!

While the new application will bring some users a certain amount of convenience and savings, it won’t be much help to others. And it certainly won’t bring about the end of cellular.

Despite the download is doing fabulously in the United States, Europe and Japan, cellular providers in other countries including Canada and Germany are also placing restrictions on the use of Skype and any other internet phone services to protect their wireless carriers whose big moneymakers are cellular voice plans.

As a result, Skype for iPhone works only through wifi connections (it also runs on iPod touches with microphones). Users thus will have to look for hotspots before accessing the service. That means dealing with hassles such as signing up with providers, finding the right brand of hotspots, logging on and so forth. It’s hardly a substitute for the anywhere/anytime cellular experience. In fact, it’s more like a mere convenient substitute for firing up the laptop to make cheap VoIP calls or chat via instant messages.

The following is an introductory video about the Skype app on Iphone, Enjoy!!
